Bear Proofing Checklist
The purpose of this checklist is to educate residents about responsible
living with bears, in order to prevent human/bear conflicts, maintain
wilderness integrity, and instill community pride. It is important to
report bear sightings in each community to the local Department of Natural
Resources office. Become educated about bears and other wildlife that
live in the community, because education breeds respect. Adhere to the
guidelines below to ensure respect for bears and other residents in the
community.
- Garbage: Do not store garbage outside, unless it is in a bear-proof
container. Put garbage at the curbside on the morning of pickup. Do
not leave garbage or food in a vehicle, not even in the trunk.
- Recycling Bin: Do not store the recycling bin outside unless
it is in a bear-proof container (or enclosure). Stop recycling temporarily
if a bear is reported in the area. Keep the bin clean and DO NOT compost
animal products or smelly fruit by-products. Clean the recycling bin
regularly (95% water/5% bleach), which reduces the smell.
- Composts: Do not put animal products in composts and stir them
regularly to aid in decomposition. If composts get smelly, sprinkle
lime on the top to cut down on odor.
- Birdfeeders: Do not use birdfeeders during the bear season
(March - November) because birds have access to plenty of natural foods
during this time. Bird baths are a great alternative way of attracting
birds without attracting bears.
- Barbeques: Burn barbeques clean after use. Wash and store them
covered out of the wind, or in a well-ventilated shed or garage.
- Pet food: Feed pets inside a building and store their food
inside.
- Fruiting plants: Remove fruit from trees and berry bushes as
it ripens and never let fruit rot on the ground below the tree.
