Who Are We?
We are two individuals that believed there was a need for more detailed
information on bear behavior and biology that would be readily accessible
to the residents of Nova Scotia. It is important that the public gain
a better understanding and acceptance of this fascinating, intelligent
mammal, particularly with the rise of bear/human interactions in Nova
Scotia.
Jenny Costelo is a Wildlife Technician who has worked many years
with the Government of Nova Scotia. She has spent the last 20 years dealing
with black bears issues in the district where she works, and is concerned
about the rise in bear/human interactions that has occurred over the last
five years. She is a graduate of the Fish and Wildlife Technologist program
from Sir Sandford Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario and a few years
ago (1998) graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Acadia University,
Wolfville, Nova Scotia. In the spring of 2006, she attended a black bear
ecology course taught by Dr. Lynn Rogers (a leading bear researcher) in
Ely, Minnesota.
Ismael (Butch) Galvez is a graduate of the Fish and Wildlife
Technologist program from Sir Sandford Fleming College and recently was
employed for a few years during the field season with the Government of
Nova Scotia. He also spent a number of years doing contract work with
various organizations. Butch has had a lifelong interest in black bears
and in the spring of 2005, attended a black bear ecology course taught
by Dr. Lynn Rogers. He recently obtained a position as a Wildlife Technologist
within the private sector.
