Literature:
Many books and papers on black bears are available and provide in-depth
information on this animal. The technical report that Dr. Lynn L. Rogers
(a prominent black bear research scientist) produced as a requirement
for his doctorate in 1987 gives detailed information on black bear behavior
and movements in a northeastern Minnesota forest (Effects of Food
Supply and Kinship on Social Behavior, Movements, and Population
of Black Bears in Northeastern Minnesota). This report is available
at the website (www.bearstudy.org).
The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources pamphlet, When Black
Bears Become a Nuisance provided valuable material on how to handle
bear problems around human habitation. Many books provided excellent reference
material on black bears and were not only interesting, but factual. Some
of these books can be obtained from local libraries or bought at local
bookstores. Other books are out of print, but still available for sale
on the internet at larger bookstores. The books are as follows (listed
in alphabetical order by author):
Becklund, Jack (1999) Summers with the Bears: Six Seasons in the
North Woods
DeBruyn, Terry D., Ph.D. (1999) Walking with Bears: One Man’s
Relationship with Three Generations of Wild Bears
Herrero, Stephen (new revised edition 2003) Bear Attacks: Their Causes
and Avoidance
Kilham, Benjamin and Ed Gray (2002) Among the Bears: Raising Orphan
Cubs in the Wild
Leslie, Robert Franklin (1975) The Bears and I: Raising Three Cubs
in the North Woods
